Matched betting & promotions
What matched betting is — converting sportsbook sign-up promos and free bets into value with reduced risk by hedging the promo bet against the other outcome.
What matched betting is
Sportsbooks spend heavily to win new customers, handing out sign-up bonuses, deposit matches, and "no-sweat" or free bets. Matched betting is the practice of turning those promos into value with reduced risk, by hedging — betting the promo at one book and backing the opposite outcome at another so the result is roughly fixed whoever wins.
The mechanics mirror arbitrage. You place the promotional bet at the offering book, then place a covering bet on every other outcome elsewhere, sized so your net result is about the same either way. With ordinary money that would typically leave a tiny loss to the vig — but because the promo adds value the book is giving away (a matched deposit, a free bet, a refund if you lose), the math can tip in your favour.
Why free bets need a different hedge
A free bet behaves differently from cash: you typically keep only the winnings, not the stake. That changes the optimal hedge — you bet the free bet at relatively long odds and hedge a smaller amount, extracting a portion of the free bet's value (often a majority, depending on the odds). A deposit match unlocks gradually as you clear a rollover requirement, so it's worked over several low-hold bets rather than one.
Matched betting rewards working promos in the right order and not missing or double-claiming them — which is bookkeeping as much as math.
From concept to tool
SmartStake runs the full workflow: Promo Converter does the hedge math, Promo Recommender ranks promos by value, and Promo Guides walk each one end to end.
Promos carry terms — minimum odds, expiry, wagering requirements — that determine whether the value is real. Always read them; the converter assumes you've met the qualifying conditions.
- Odds, prices, expected value, conversion rates, and profit figures shown are estimates based on the last data we retrieved. They can change at any time — confirm the current price at the book before you bet, as odds may move and entry errors can occur.
- Sportsbook promotions are typically available to new customers only and are subject to each operator’s terms, conditions, and eligibility requirements.
